  • What should I bring?
Enough clothing for the varied weather conditions of the mountains. Spending money for food. A chair to sit in for hanging out on Friday and Saturday isn't a bad idea but certainly not required. Sufficient clothing is fine. Bring your FRS radio and probably a cooler.
  • What about cell phones and radios?
Really cell phones just don't work for a large majority of the area. They should work in Tellico Plains at lunchtime as I believe there's reception there for some providers. FRS radios are going to be set to channel 7 and most communication is through these while driving and while wandering around the Fontana Village complex.
  • What do I need to do to prepare my car?
Most likely, nothing. Check the air pressure in your tires and keep your brakes in check. It's just a little more hilly and curvy than what you drive every day; they are still just roads not a "24hr du mountains" endurance race. One doesn't need a fresh set of brake pads and tires unless they intend to overdrive their vehicle the whole time. If that is your mentality, you should probably stay home as driving on the edge are where accidents come from. Take it easy and you'll be fine! There is a gas station located nearby that charges a hefty price for its convenient location. Filling up in places other than around the Dragon is probably a good idea if you want to save an extra $2-4 for a fillup.
  • What about food?
Typically some folks pack coolers and eat out of them, or some choose to dine out the whole time. Keep in mind that there are no restaurants immediately nearby (20 minutes drive typically) other than the restaurant in the Village. Fontana Village is really the only thing there in its location. We have a cookout setup for Friday and Saturday evenings so definitely plan ahead on buying your food.
  • Where are the adult beverages?
It's a dry county so purchasing alcohol in or near Fontana is impossible. Really the closest place is Bryson City so plan ahead! Feel free to enjoy an adult beverage in a reasonable manner, provided that you are of the proper age. ABSOLUTELY NO DRINKING AND DRIVING! There are always sober folks about and if you have had any drinks at all and have the urge or need to go anywhere, most of them are just looking for an excuse for more driving so hitch a ride that way.
